Olá,

Hoje, eu queria conversar com você sobre a preposição "without".

Poderíamos dizer que ela vem da outra preposição "with" = com

Já "without" passar significar "sem".

I went out without my umbrella.
Eu sai sem meu guarda-chuva.


I couldn't have done it without you.
Eu não teria conseguido sem você.

I am here without you.
Cá estou eu sem você!

Então, vamos lá! "hanger-on" é aquela pessoa

que procura sempre estar no meio de pessoas

ricas e importantes da cidade com um único

propósito: obter algum tipo de vantagem, ou seja,

é uma pessoa "interesseira, oportunista".

Como se diz "recorrer a" em inglês?

Quando necessitamos de alguma coisa, normalmente nós

RECORREMOS À alguém ou à algo para nos ajudar, certo?

E em inglês? Como dizer "recorrer a"?

Para expressar isto, usa-se a expressão

"to turn to"
(lembre-se de que o primeiro "to" é o infinitivo do verbo e o segundo é a preposição)

Without someone to turn to for advice, making the most appropriate choice can be difficult.
Sem ninguém para recorrer (por conselho), fazer a escolha adequada pode ser difícil.

Kate's family lived a long way away, and she had no one to turn to.
A família de Kate morava muito longe, e ela não não tinha ninguém para recorrer.

P.S. a long way away = bem distante / no one = ninguém

She turned to drugs after the break-up of her marriage.
Ela recorreu às (*procurou as) drogas após o fim do seu casamento.
